NAUGHTY-CUL CHIC!

This mid 1980s Louis Feraud Haute Couture gown is naughty, but very nautical, so we call it naughty-cull. Why is is naughty? Well it has a slit up to there. Why is it nautical, we like to think that blue silk crepe de chine accented with a blue and white silk ruffled rosette screams "get thee to Capri!"

The asymmetric neckline is very sophisticated and the seaming of the back is quite dramatic. A silk ruffled rosette can look a bit over-the-top, but this evening gown remains chic without being chintz. And now it's time for Decades to "Sail Away" for the night.

GREY FLANNEL FOR THE GIRLS

James Galanos famously used masculine fabrics in his impeccable women's designs and the monastic V-shaped grey flannel maxi gown below is a triumph of simplicity, modernity, and wonderfully wearable. Using a fabric that is an essential part of any fashionable man's wardrobe, Mr. Galanos takes grey flannel and makes it feminine and infinitely wearable, A simple architectural design with a slight A-line and coordinating belt, this late 60s evening dress has hidden pockets in the front seams at the hips. This provides a perfect place to hide your stash or at least provide you with a warm place for your hands. Speaking of warm, the dress is ideal as the temperature goes down while one's social calendar goes crazy. When the weather outside is frightful (regardless of your Global Warming beliefs, come October, it's grey flannel season!), this dress will take you to the most sublime black-tie affair and keep you warm. It's actually quite chic with flats for entertaining at home, too. So many options.

Unexpected Cardin Haute Couture

This gown is the antithesis of what one thinks when the name Pierre Cardin is uttered. We bring to you, from the depths of the Decades collection, an Haute Couture silk Grecian-style gown in burgundy chiffon. Cardin strayed from his usual clean lines, bright colors, and ultra modern construction when he created this look. The gown consists of several panels that drape over and around a central dress. There is a panel that hangs off the shoulders and dips down in the front. Another panel wraps from the shoulders down and around the back, and covers the lower back half of the gown. The upper back has a long slit with four tiny ribbons that hold the dress together. Finally, there is a sash created of the same chiffon material that wraps the beautiful couture bundle together. It may sound from the description that there is a lot going on, and there is, but it all blends beautifully together to create a very soft and elegant look.

STUDIO 54 AT DECADES

When Decades first opened in 1997, our inventory primarily consisted of designs from the 1960s and 1970s and our favorite designer was Halston. Flash forward eleven plus years, and we still love us some Halston! It's been quite a rocky-road for the House of Halston post the incomprable Roy Halston Frowick, who passed away in 1990. A slew of failed attempts to revive this revered label. Just this past week the latest Creative Director of the brand, Marco Zanini, left the esteemed house. The codes of Halston are so clear and simple: from sexy one shoulder silhouettes in chiffon to matte jersey cowl neck halters. Halston was a master of modern simplicity.

The two gowns below are Halston designs from the 1970s and they remind us of what is the true spirit of Halston. The one-shoulder cherry red chiffon dress has a simple elastic waist and petal shaped chiffon over lay at the hips created by the wrap effect of the skirt. It's hard to believe the dress is from 1976. It's totally contemporary. The second dress is a black over peach chiffon layered halter gown with an elastic waist and revealing back. The skirt has some volume and it just makes one want to dance.

Either dress can go black tie or cocktail and be dressed down for a day event, too. Personalize each dress with dramatic Tibetan antique cuffs or go for the Elsa Perreti for Tiffany cuffs that are so synonymous with Halston designs. No matter what, these dresses are the real deal and would get you into Studio 54 with one step of your strappy lizard sandal.

CHOCO-MACKIE

The beautiful Bob Mackie gown on our lovely model is a chocolate lover's dream. The classic Mackie look is achieved using an iridescent chiffon. As you move in the dress, the colors change from a dark chocolate to a milk chocolate, relative to the lighting that is hitting the gown at the time. This gown has a bustier top with boning held up by spaghetti straps that split to form a triangular shape just past the shoulder. The back of the gown is the same chocolate material which is gathered towards the zipper and forms the Mackie V shape. If you were Willy Wonka's date to the 2008 Confectioner's Ball, we would say this gown is very appropriate!

A Belt for Every Occasion

Belts have been a fabulous waist adornment since the bronze age, but as you can see below we have come a long way since then. The most vibrant in the bunch is a purple leather Gucci belt with bold lizard covered rings and a gold buckle with lizard trim that can be worn with the rings in the front or the back. The second belt is by a French designer located in Cannes, Anne Vignes. It is constructed of bone colored leather in a scalloped design with gold grommet details all the way around the belt. Finally, we have a burgundy suede Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche belt with a crosshatch design of the same material all the way around. This bevy of beautiful belts is sure to be the perfect accoutrement to the simple little summer dress hanging in your wardrobe.
